Important Notice Regarding the Elimination of the Graduate Student Professional Development Grant

It is with deep regret that we must announce the elimination of the Graduate Student Professional Development Grant (GSPDG).  We are sure you are aware of the recent budget reductions required to meet the University’s operating margin.  The Office of Graduate Studies was required to reduce our FY2014 general expense budget by 28%.  As a non-revenue generating unit, Graduate Studies operates with a modest budget.  Our operating expenses are  limited and offer little room for reductions. Unfortunately, the greatest discretionary expense for the office is the Professional Development Grant.  Given the scope of the challenge to reduce our budget, it was necessary to sacrifice the grant in order to sustain our business operations.  We will phase out the grant by the end of the fiscal year.

April 1st was the regularly scheduled deadline for GSPDG applications which were funded by Graduate Student Associations (GSA) during winter quarter. These have been passed on to Graduate Studies by various units to be considered for GSPDG funding which will occur by the end of spring quarter. We will have one more round of funding, as described below:

Travel Dates:  Travel Must be completed by June 30, 2013.
GSA Application Deadline:  Completed applications must be to individual GSA’s by their fall quarter deadline. Check with GSA representatives for the exact date, typically between week 7-9 of fall quarter.
GSPDG Application Deadline:  November 15, 2013GSA forwards funded applications to Graduate Studies for consideration of additional GSPDG funding.
GSPDG Decisions and Funding: Completed by November 27, 2013

It is our hope that schools and divisions will be able to address the gap left by the elimination of this fund.  It is our hope, too, that the Office of Graduate Studies can find the means to reinstate the grant in the future as our commitment to supporting graduate student research and professional development remains steadfast.

If you have any questions, please contact Paula.
